Using the Research Tools
How to Explore the Statistics and Map
Use the charts and map to explore recorded similarities between cases. These tools are intended to support responsible research and public awareness. Similar details do not necessarily mean that separate cases are connected.
1. Choose Statistics
Select one or more categories such as States, Years, Months, Case Types, Exact Ages, Gender, or Ethnicity. Each active category receives its own interactive graph.
2. Select Chart Values
Click a bar, circle section, or value beneath a graph to add it to the current comparison. Select the same value again to remove it.
3. Combine Research Filters
Filters from different categories work together. For example, select July, 1993, and Pennsylvania to review cases matching all three recorded details.
4. Explore the Map
Use the map filters to narrow cases by country, state or province, case type, year, or month. Select a marker to view cases associated with that approximate city location.
5. Zoom and Review Locations
Numbered map clusters represent several nearby locations. Select a cluster to zoom closer, then select an individual marker to view cases associated with that city.
6. Open Matching Case Files
The linked lists beneath the charts and map update automatically. Select a name to open the complete case file in a new browser tab without losing the current research results.
