Overview

On April 11, 2001, 20-year-old Branson Kayne Perry left his familyโ€™s home in Skidmore, Missouri and walked outside to put jumper cables in a nearby shed. That was the last time anyone saw him. He never returned โ€” and despite years of law enforcement efforts, tips from the public, and sporadic investigative developments, his disappearance remains unsolved.

Perry was known locally as a friendly young man who lived with his father at 304 West Oak Street. His parents were divorced, and his father had recently been hospitalized. On the day he vanished, Perry had invited a friend over to help clean the house before his father came home; at around 3 p.m., he stepped outside and simply disappeared.

The Vanishing of Branson Perry: A Case That Still Haunts Skidmore, Missouri

Mysterious Circumstances and Early Investigation

When family members realized Perry had not been seen or heard from, his grandmother discovered his house unlocked and empty โ€” with unusual clues like the radio still playing. No contact was made with friends, family, or employers. A missing persons report was filed on April 17, 2001, and search efforts soon followed. Local law enforcement organized ground searches covering a 15-mile radius around Skidmore, but these produced no concrete evidence of Perryโ€™s whereabouts.

Perhaps the oddest detail from the early probe was the behavior of the jumper cables. Police initially could not locate them where Perry said he was going, but about two weeks later the cables were found mysteriously placed just inside the shed doorway โ€” with no explanation for how they arrived there or who put them there.

A Disturbing Development: A Person of Interest Emerges

In 2003, investigators turned attention to Jack Wayne Rogers โ€” a Presbyterian minister and former Boy Scout leader from Fulton, Missouri โ€” after his arrest on unrelated criminal charges (assault, practicing medicine without a license, and child pornography). Disturbing online posts linked to Rogers described a graphic account involving the kidnapping, torture, and killing of a young blond male hitchhiker, buried in a remote area of the Ozarks. Although Perryโ€™s description fit the account, Rogers vehemently denied ever knowing him or being involved in his disappearance. However, a turtle claw necklace resembling one Perry owned was found in Rogersโ€™ vehicle during a search. Rogers was convicted in 2004 on the unrelated charges and received lengthy prison sentences, but has never been charged in the Perry case.

Subsequent Searches and Leads

Law enforcement followed additional tips over the years. In June 2009, a credible tip led authorities to undertake a deep excavation in a rural area near Quitman, Missouri, but no remains were found. Around 2010, Perryโ€™s mother offered a $20,000 reward for information that might lead to his whereabouts.

Tragically, both of Perryโ€™s parents have since passed away โ€” his father in 2004, and his mother in February 2011 after a battle with melanoma. Friends and advocates have pledged to keep searching, with support from organizations like the CUE Center for Missing Persons.

Current Status of the Case

As of the most recent updates, the case remains open and active. Law enforcement has indicated they identified a new suspect in 2022, but emphasized that more evidence is needed before any charges can be filed. No arrest has been announced, and the whereabouts of Branson Perry remain unknown.

While various theories and unverified speculations have circulated in public forums and amateur investigations, none are confirmed by official sources โ€” and the mystery continues to haunt those who remember him, especially in Skidmore and its surrounding communities.
