Detailed Case Breakdown
Christine Marie Eastin: The 1971 Disappearance from a Hayward, California Car Wash
Christine Marie Eastin was 19 years old when she disappeared from Hayward, California, on January 18, 1971. More than five decades later, her disappearance remains unresolved and is still listed by the Hayward Police Department, California Department of Justice and FBI.
Authorities suspect foul play.
Christine Eastin’s Last Night in Hayward
Christine, sometimes called Chris or Christy, was born January 4, 1952. She had blonde hair and blue eyes and stood approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall. She had a small scar in the center of her forehead and a surgical scar on her abdomen.
On the evening of January 18, 1971, Christine went shopping with a friend at Mervyn’s and bought a pair of boots. After dropping her friend off, Christine returned home and later left at approximately 10:00 p.m.
She was driving a blue 1969 Ford Maverick belonging to her former boyfriend. Her plans included washing the car and then meeting him at the Jack in the Box where he worked.
Christine never arrived.
The Abandoned Ford Maverick at Charlie’s Car Wash
The car Christine had been driving was discovered at Charlie’s Car Wash at 25400 Mission Boulevard in Hayward.
The vehicle had been washed, but Christine was nowhere to be found.
Official California records state that the doors were locked and items that had been inside the vehicle were found on the pavement outside it. The FBI reports that Christine’s purse remained locked inside the car.
Those circumstances became some of the most important details in the mystery surrounding her disappearance.
Christine was last known to be wearing a black or brown leather coat, black boots, blue slacks, a red, white and blue pinstriped tunic, and a bluish-gold scarf.
Family and Friends Did Not Believe Christine Ran Away
Christine had recently graduated from Sunset High School and was attending Chabot College. According to accounts from those close to her, she had plans for her future and was expected to begin a new job.
Her family rejected the idea that she had voluntarily disappeared.
Christine’s personal possessions remained behind, and she never contacted her family or friends again. Her disappearance was ultimately classified as an endangered or involuntary missing-person case, and authorities came to suspect foul play.
Her former boyfriend was questioned during the investigation. Later accounts state that investigators ultimately eliminated him as a suspect.
A Witness Comes Forward Nearly 50 Years Later
One of the most significant developments in the case came in 2019.
A woman contacted investigators and reported that she had witnessed what she now believed was Christine’s abduction at the car wash on the night she disappeared.
According to the witness’s account reported by KTVU, two men were associated with a white Ford van. She reportedly saw one man putting Christine into the rear of the van while she was able to get a better look at its driver.
The witness described the van as having distinctive rectangular side mirrors sometimes called “West Coast Mirrors.”
Investigators subsequently released a composite sketch of the man the witness said she saw.
The account was provided almost 48 years after Christine disappeared and therefore remains a witness allegation rather than independently established proof of exactly what occurred that night. Nevertheless, it gave investigators a potentially important new scenario to examine: that Christine may have been abducted from the car wash.
The $50,000 Reward and Renewed Investigation
In 2020, as the 49th anniversary of Christine’s disappearance approached, Hayward police renewed their public appeal for information.
At that time, authorities said a detective was specifically assigned to Christine’s investigation, and a $50,000 reward was being offered for information leading to a conviction connected with her disappearance.
Police emphasized that the investigation remained open and that they intended to continue pursuing answers for Christine’s family.
The reward has historical significance in the case, but anyone seeking current reward terms should verify them directly with Hayward police rather than assuming the conditions reported in 2020 remain unchanged.
Latest Publicly Available Investigation Information
As of September 2026, Christine has not disappeared from official law-enforcement records.
The California Department of Justice continues to list Christine Marie Eastin as missing and identifies Hayward Police Department case 71011297. The Hayward Police Department also continues to feature Christine on its official missing-persons page and states that foul play is suspected.
The FBI likewise currently maintains Christine Marie Eastin on its Kidnappings/Missing Persons website. Its San Francisco Field Office listing directs anyone with information to the Hayward Police Department or the FBI.
The latest major publicly reported investigative development located for this case remains the witness who came forward in 2019 and the resulting composite sketch, followed by Hayward police’s renewed appeal and confirmation of an active investigation in 2020.
There does not appear to be a publicly announced arrest, recovery of Christine, identification of her remains, or official resolution of her disappearance in the current law-enforcement listings reviewed in September 2026.
Why Christine Eastin’s Case Remains Important
Christine vanished during an extremely small window of time after an otherwise ordinary evening: shopping with a friend, returning home, washing a car and planning to meet someone she knew.
Her car remained behind. Her purse remained inside it. She never reached her intended destination, and she never contacted her loved ones again.
Then, nearly half a century later, a witness described seeing what may have been the critical moment in the case.
Whether that account can ultimately identify the person or people responsible remains unknown. What is known is that Christine Marie Eastin’s disappearance remains an open missing-person investigation, and law enforcement continues to ask the public for information.
Someone who remembers the white van, its distinctive mirrors, the car wash, Christine’s movements that evening, or statements made by another person in the years following her disappearance could still possess information investigators need.
