Dawn Marie Mohn Missing Person Case: What Happened After She Left a Green Bay Bar in 2000?

Dawn Marie Mohn was 41 years old when she disappeared from Green Bay, Wisconsin, in August 2000. More than two decades later, she remains missing, and the Green Bay Police Department continues to treat her disappearance as an active cold case.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Mohn has been missing since August 21, 2000, from Green Bay in Brown County. She was 5 feet 1 inch tall and approximately 118 pounds, with hazel eyes. Her naturally blond hair had reportedly been dyed red around the time she vanished. Her NamUs missing-person number is MP8079.

The Night Dawn Mohn Disappeared

In the early morning hours of August 21, 2000, Mohn was at a corn roast at Lenny’s Tap on North Broadway in Green Bay. She left the bar at approximately 2:00 a.m. and was reportedly seen walking in the direction of the home she shared with her boyfriend.

Witness accounts indicated that Mohn was heavily intoxicated. According to Green Bay Detective Brad Biller, witnesses described her as having difficulty maintaining her balance. The trip home was expected to take roughly 15 minutes, but Mohn never arrived.

Dawn’s Wallet Is Found

A potentially important piece of evidence surfaced shortly after Mohn disappeared: her empty wallet was found in the 400 block of North Broadway, near Lenny’s Tap.

Her boyfriend reported her missing three days after her disappearance. According to investigators, he told police that Mohn had previously disappeared for several days at a time, which was why she was not immediately reported missing.

Mohn had no vehicle or driver’s license at the time. Investigators have also reported that she did not have a job, cash or credit cards, circumstances that would have made independently leaving the area more difficult. Her family has said that she regularly kept in contact with them and that they did not believe she would simply leave without telling anyone.

Investigators Examine Dawn’s Relationship

Attention eventually turned toward the relationship between Mohn and the boyfriend with whom she lived.

Detective Biller told WBAY in 2023 that there were reports the couple had been arguing around the time Mohn disappeared. Mohn reportedly called her boyfriend near closing time, but he did not answer because he was angry with her.

Police searched the apartment the couple shared but reported finding nothing unusual. Investigators nevertheless focused considerable attention on the boyfriend because of information they received about their relationship. He remained a person of interest, but investigators said his alibi for the relevant time period checked out. He was never charged in connection with Mohn’s disappearance.

Investigators also considered other people. Police questioned two individuals who had reportedly been at the bar on the night Mohn vanished, and testing conducted in connection with one apartment did not produce evidence that resolved the case.

Did Dawn Enter the Fox River?

The nearby Fox River became another focus of the investigation.

According to case information compiled by The Charley Project, Mohn was reportedly known to sleep near the river when she was intoxicated. Cadaver dogs later alerted to a section of the river, but technological limitations prevented investigators at the time from conducting the type of underwater search they wanted. Radar did not locate anything conclusive. The relevant river area was subsequently dredged.

The possibility that Mohn entered the river accidentally has been considered, but investigators continued pursuing other explanations for her disappearance.

New Searches More Than Two Decades Later

The Fox River evidence eventually led investigators somewhere else.

In an August 2023 interview with WBAY, Detective Biller explained that investigators determined where material dredged from the river had been deposited in Brown County. Police identified three areas associated with that material and brought in cadaver dogs from southern Wisconsin to search them.

At the time of the WBAY report, two of the three locations had been searched, and investigators expected the cadaver-dog team to return to conduct the final search. This represented one of the most significant publicly reported investigative developments in Mohn’s case in years.

Police have also continued checking government records for indications that Mohn might still be alive, including Social Security records. Her DNA has been entered into national databases, and information about her disappearance has been distributed through state and national missing-person systems. Her case was also featured on playing cards distributed to inmates in an effort to generate information.

Where the Investigation Stands

No publicly located source establishes that Dawn Mohn has been found or that anyone has been charged in connection with her disappearance.

The most recent official Wisconsin Department of Justice listing located for this article continues to classify Mohn as missing from Green Bay. The state listing currently gives her age as 67 and continues to ask anyone with information to contact the Green Bay Police Department.

In 2023, Green Bay Police Captain Jeff Brester emphasized that the cold case remained active and would continue to be assigned to detectives as personnel changed. Investigators said they intended to continue pursuing information until they could determine what happened to Mohn.

More than 26 years after she disappeared, the central question remains unanswered: What happened to Dawn Marie Mohn after she left North Broadway in Green Bay?
