Emily was reportedly living in the Chicago area and attending Illinois State Normal University, now Illinois State University. She also worked at a Pontiac automobile dealership. The 1966 marriage record creates a critical distinction: Emily apparently disappeared from her family’s life by 1964, but there is evidence suggesting she—or someone representing herself as Emily—was still alive and in California approximately two years later.

No publicly available information reviewed for this article establishes whether authorities have conclusively authenticated the person in the 1966 marriage record as Emily.

What Happened to Bruce Richards?

Bruce Richards later remarried another woman and subsequently divorced her. Researchers have reportedly been unable to locate a divorce record terminating his marriage to Emily.

A contributor claiming a family connection reported that DNA was being examined. That unidentified woman was subsequently identified as Anita Louise Piteau, meaning she was not Emily. The forum information concerning the testing itself is community-supplied information rather than an official investigative announcement.

Emily was also listed among the exclusions for the formerly unidentified Pinellas County, Florida woman found in a steamer trunk in 1969. That woman was ultimately identified as Sylvia June Atherton, likewise eliminating another theory discussed by online researchers.

The update notice does not announce that Emily was located or explain publicly what information was changed.
