The Night Iva Edwards Disappeared

On the evening of October 25, 1974, James Edwards reportedly arrived at the Ranch House and remained in his truck in the parking lot for several hours while Iva worked.

Rena saw her father there and reportedly became frightened. According to later accounts, she warned her mother that she believed James might kill them. Iva reassured her daughter and told her to return home.

Iva later called Rena and indicated that she planned to come home after work so they could eat together. According to the account, Iva sounded normal during the conversation.

She never arrived.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on October 26, a coworker reportedly saw Iva leave the Ranch House with James. The pair walked across the street in the direction of Big Daddy’s Lounge. This is the last independently reported sighting of Iva described in publicly available case summaries.

James Edwards’ Account of the Early Morning

When questioned, James told authorities that he and Iva had a drink at Big Daddy’s Lounge and that he later drove her to the apartment where she was staying.

According to his account, they reached the apartment at approximately 2:45 a.m. He claimed that several men were in the parking area near Iva’s vehicle and that he watched Iva walk toward the apartment before leaving for Fort Myers.

James reportedly said he reached Fort Myers at approximately 5:45 a.m.

Iva’s family did not believe she voluntarily disappeared. Her clothes and personal belongings were reportedly left behind, and she had told her daughter that she intended to return home after work.

Investigators Began Suspecting Foul Play

After Iva’s daughters told police about their father’s alleged history of violence and abuse, investigators began treating the disappearance as a possible homicide.

James Edwards underwent a polygraph examination and reportedly failed it. A failed polygraph is not proof of guilt, however, and investigators did not develop sufficient physical evidence to charge him.

Iva remained missing as the years passed.

The Case Was Reopened in 1989

Approximately 15 years after Iva disappeared, investigators reopened the case in 1989 and questioned James again.

He continued to deny killing or otherwise harming his wife.

Investigators also received potentially significant statements from members of the Edwards family. According to published case summaries, James’ brother told authorities that James had bragged about killing Iva about a year after she vanished. A daughter and her husband also reportedly told investigators that James had made threats referencing what he claimed to have done to Iva.

The Charley Project also continues to classify her as an endangered missing person and states that foul play is suspected. Its public case summary identifies the Hialeah Police Department as the investigating agency.

In February 2026, a Websleuths user suggested that Iva might resemble an unidentified woman whose remains were found near Altamonte Springs, Florida, in November 1974. The unidentified woman has been discussed separately as a possible victim of serial killer Gerald Stano.

That proposed comparison is a public theory, not a confirmed investigative development. No publicly available law-enforcement announcement was located establishing that Iva Edwards has been formally compared with, excluded from, or identified as that unidentified woman.

Earlier online discussions have proposed other unidentified-person or serial-killer connections as well. Those suggestions should likewise be treated as theories unless authorities publicly confirm that a comparison has been conducted.

Why the Iva Edwards Case Remains Significant

The circumstances surrounding Iva’s disappearance have made the case particularly troubling: she had recently separated from her husband, reportedly feared violence within the relationship, had plans to return home after work, and left her belongings behind.
