The Night Jael Hamblen Disappeared

On the evening of October 11, 2014, Jael and her roommate, Kendra Vincent Estrada, went to dinner. Their children were being watched by Estrada’s mother. The women returned to their home in the Trailside Loop area of South Anchorage before approximately 10:00 p.m.

Jael apparently considered going back out that night, while her roommate went to bed.

According to later accounts of the investigation, Jael was upset that night after being rejected by a man in whom she was interested. At approximately 1:40 a.m. on October 12, she reportedly texted a male friend and said she was crying and wanted to meet him. Shortly after 3:00 a.m., she communicated with another man. Those early-morning communications are the last known contact with Jael described in publicly available accounts of the case.

Many missing-person profiles describe Jael as having disappeared on October 11, 2014, because that was the evening she was last known to be at her residence. Jael Is Discovered Missing

At approximately 10:32 a.m. on October 12, Estrada texted Jael but received no response. Around noon, she checked Jael’s room and discovered she was gone. Her bed was reportedly unmade.

Initially, Estrada believed Jael might have gone somewhere during the night or early that morning. Additional attempts to reach her were unsuccessful, and calls eventually went directly to voicemail.

Jael had apparently taken two important belongings with her: her purse and her iPhone 5.

What she did not take was her vehicle.

Her 1998 Ford Expedition, Alaska license plate GFB641, remained parked at the residence. She also left behind her infant son.

Jael’s mother reported her missing to the Anchorage Police Department on October 14, 2014.

What Investigators Learned From Jael’s Phone

Investigators later analyzed Jael’s phone records. According to published case summaries, messages Estrada sent during the afternoon of October 12 never reached Jael’s phone. That suggested the phone was either switched off or its battery was already dead by then.

There has been no publicly documented communication from Jael since the early morning of October 12.

For months, neither Jael nor the purse and phone she apparently carried when she left the residence were located.

Then, in March 2015, the investigation took a significant turn.

Jael Hamblen’s Purse Is Found in Chugiak

Approximately five months after Jael disappeared, hikers discovered a black purse buried in snow along a trail in Chugiak, north of Anchorage.

Inside were belongings identifying the purse as Jael’s, including her Social Security card and iPhone 5. The hikers turned the items over to police.

The location immediately raised questions.

Published accounts state investigators did not believe Jael was likely to have placed the purse there herself. Temperatures were below freezing on the night she disappeared, and family information indicated that Jael was not someone who enjoyed hiking.

The purse became one of the most significant publicly disclosed pieces of physical evidence connected with her disappearance.

Conflicting Reports About a Homicide Investigation

The discovery of Jael’s belongings was followed by conflicting public statements about how police were classifying the case.

On March 30, 2015, the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman reported that Jael’s adoptive mother, Colleen Vague, had been informed that new information caused the investigation to shift toward homicide detectives. Vague said she had been told additional evidence indicated the case was being treated as a homicide. Police also requested a DNA sample from Jael’s young son, according to the report.

But Anchorage Police publicly disputed that characterization several days later.

In an April 2, 2015 follow-up, APD spokeswoman Jenifer Castro said Jael’s disappearance still remained a missing-person investigation, not a formally established homicide case. Castro explained that homicide detectives also handled missing-person cases and said police did not then have sufficient evidence to conclude that Jael’s disappearance resulted from criminal activity. At the same time, homicide was not being ruled out.

That distinction remains important.

Subsequent missing-person resources, including The Charley Project, describe authorities as investigating Jael’s disappearance as a possible homicide, but no publicly available evidence establishes that Jael has been confirmed deceased.
