Jared Hanna Disappearance: Timeline, Investigation, and Latest Case Updates
On July 2, 2011, 28-year-old Jared Edward Hanna vanished after leaving his home in Jerseyville, Illinois. More than a decade later, his disappearance remains unsolved despite numerous searches, witness sightings, and continued public interest.
Hanna was a devoted father who had custody of his two daughters. Family members have consistently stated that disappearing voluntarily was completely out of character. His unexplained disappearance has become one of southern Illinois’ most enduring missing person cases.

Surveillance footage later captured him purchasing a soft drink at a convenience store before continuing his travels. Investigators determined that his cellphone was later detected near East Alton around midday and near Centralia later that evening before all activity suddenly stopped.

Witness Sightings
Investigators received two reported sightings believed to involve Jared after his truck was abandoned.
One motorist reported seeing a man matching Jared’s description walking along Jolliff Bridge Road around midnight.
Another resident reported that a man believed to be Jared knocked on their door at approximately 8:30 a.m. on July 3, asking for directions to Centralia and requesting a glass of water before continuing on foot.
Neither sighting has ever been conclusively verified, but both have remained significant elements of the investigation.
Search Efforts
Law enforcement, volunteers, and family members conducted numerous searches of the wooded and rural areas surrounding where Jared’s truck was located.
In October 2011, investigators received another important lead when Jared’s black shoulder bag, containing personal belongings and identification, was discovered approximately 1.5 miles from where his truck had been abandoned, beneath a deer stand. The discovery prompted another extensive search involving deputies, volunteers, ATVs, horseback riders, and search teams. Despite these efforts, no trace of Jared was found.
Additional searches have taken place over the years, but none have produced evidence explaining what happened to him.
Investigation
Authorities have never publicly identified a suspect or named a person of interest.
Because Jared left behind his children, vehicle, identification, and personal belongings, investigators have generally treated his disappearance as suspicious rather than a voluntary disappearance.
Numerous theories have circulated publicly over the years, but law enforcement has not confirmed any of them. Investigators continue to encourage anyone with information—regardless of how insignificant it may seem—to come forward.
Latest Investigation Information
As of 2026, Jared Hanna remains missing and his case remains open.
The 15-year anniversary of his disappearance prompted renewed media coverage and public appeals for information. Authorities continue to accept tips through the Jersey County Sheriff’s Office, Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, and regional Crime Stoppers organizations. No major investigative breakthrough or recovery has been publicly announced, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact investigators, even if they believe someone else may have already reported it.
