Who Was Juan Puente Guzman?

Guzman was a Hispanic man who was approximately 36 years old when he disappeared. He was described as standing between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing approximately 170 to 200 pounds. He had brown hair and brown eyes.

Before his disappearance, Guzman lived and worked in the San Francisco area. His employment reportedly varied, and he had worked around apartment complexes and as a gardener. Family members described him as something of a loner.

The Visit to Fresno

Sometime in 1974, Guzman traveled by Greyhound bus from the San Francisco area to Fresno, California, where he visited his sister and other family members.

He remained with his relatives for approximately one week. When it was time for him to leave, family members drove him to the Greyhound bus station in Fresno so he could return home.

During that drive, Guzman reportedly told his relatives something troubling. He said he had become involved with the wife of an apartment owner and had gotten into trouble because of the relationship.

According to the surviving account, Guzman indicated that he planned to find another place to stay. He told his sister that he would contact her after he had done so. He then got out of the vehicle at the bus station.

His family never heard from him again.

In August 2022, a Websleuths participant raised the possibility of an unidentified man found in Fresno County in 1974. Additional unidentified-person comparisons were discussed in 2024. In a separate May 30, 2024 discussion concerning unidentified remains discovered near Williams, California, a Websleuths member reported submitting Juan Puente Guzman as a possible match through the Doe Network. No publicly verified result establishing that the remains belonged to Guzman was located, and his NamUs missing-person entry remains publicly available.

More Than 50 Years Without Answers

The final confirmed chapter of Juan Puente Guzman’s story is remarkably ordinary: a visit with relatives, a ride to a bus station and a promise to get back in touch.

What happened afterward remains unknown.

Whether Guzman boarded a bus, returned to San Francisco, traveled elsewhere voluntarily, encountered someone connected with the problems he had mentioned, or became the victim of an unrelated event has never been publicly established.
