Detailed Case Breakdown
Krista Marie Sypher: Plover, Wisconsin Woman Remains Missing After Husband’s Murder Conviction
Krista Marie Sypher disappeared from her home in Plover, Wisconsin, on March 13, 2017. Although her remains have never been recovered, her husband, Jason Sypher, was convicted in 2019 of first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse in connection with her death.
Nearly a decade after Krista disappeared, Wisconsin authorities continue to list her as a missing person. Her case remains unusual because a murder conviction was secured without the recovery of her body.
Krista Sypher’s Disappearance
Krista was 44 years old when she was last seen during the morning hours of March 13, 2017, at her residence on Hoffman Drive in Plover, Portage County, Wisconsin. Her vehicle remained at the residence, and she subsequently had no known contact with family or friends and did not report to work.
Her husband, Jason Sypher, did not report her missing until March 20, one week after she was last seen. He initially told investigators he believed Krista had left voluntarily.
Krista’s disappearance quickly developed into an extensive investigation involving local, state and federal authorities.
Evidence Investigators Uncovered
Investigators examined the Sypher residence and Jason Sypher’s vehicle. According to court records and reporting from the investigation, a trained cadaver-detection dog alerted in multiple locations associated with the residence and vehicle. The admissibility of that evidence would later become one of the issues Jason challenged after his conviction.
Investigators also examined Jason’s movements in the days surrounding Krista’s disappearance. Evidence presented during the case included GPS information showing trips near dumpsters and waste-disposal locations. Police recovered a severely damaged iPhone from a dumpster area, and investigators testified that Jason’s fingerprints were found on a bag associated with the recovered phone.
Evidence also showed Jason purchased large garbage bags on March 13, the day Krista disappeared. Investigators additionally learned that the household’s garbage collected the following day was unusually heavy. Searches eventually extended to the Cranberry Creek Landfill in Wisconsin Rapids.
Despite extensive searching, Krista’s remains were not recovered.
Arrest and Murder Charges
More than a year after Krista disappeared, Jason Sypher was arrested on August 24, 2018. He was subsequently prosecuted for first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse.
The prosecution’s case was circumstantial because Krista’s body had never been found. Prosecutors argued that the combined physical, digital and behavioral evidence demonstrated that Jason killed Krista and concealed her body.
The defense disputed the prosecution’s interpretation of the evidence and maintained that Krista could have voluntarily disappeared. Jason maintained his innocence.
Jason Sypher Convicted
Jason’s jury trial began in October 2019 in Portage County.
On October 23, 2019, after a seven-day trial, the jury found him guilty of first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse. The jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning its verdict.
On November 26, 2019, Jason was sentenced to life imprisonment for Krista’s murder. The court allowed him to petition for extended supervision after 30 years. He also received five years of initial confinement followed by five years of extended supervision for hiding a corpse, concurrent with the homicide sentence.
The conviction established in court that Krista had been murdered even though investigators had not located her remains.
The Search for Krista Did Not End With the Conviction
A guilty verdict answered the legal question of who was responsible for Krista’s death, but it did not answer one of the most important questions for her family and investigators: Where is Krista?
Wisconsin’s Clearinghouse for Missing & Exploited Children & Adults continues to list Krista as missing from Plover since March 13, 2017. The state specifically notes that Jason was convicted of her homicide and that the location of Krista’s remains remains unknown.
As recently as January 2025, WSAW revisited the case as part of its Forgotten Wisconsin Cold Cases series. The report emphasized that despite the murder conviction, exactly what happened to Krista and where her remains were placed remain unresolved questions.
Latest Developments in the Krista Sypher Case
The most recent major developments have occurred in the courts.
Jason Sypher pursued postconviction relief and appealed his conviction. Among the issues raised were challenges involving the admission of cadaver-detection-dog evidence, testimony concerning a statement attributed to him by a former girlfriend, and claims of ineffective assistance of trial counsel.
On September 25, 2025, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals affirmed the judgment of conviction and the orders denying Jason’s postconviction motions.
Jason then petitioned the Wisconsin Supreme Court to review the appellate decision.
On April 22, 2026, the Wisconsin Supreme Court denied that petition for review. The Court of Appeals decision therefore remained in place.
Meanwhile, Krista herself remains officially missing. The Wisconsin missing-person database continues to carry her case, and authorities continue to request information that could help locate her remains.
Krista Sypher Is Still Missing
Krista would now be 54 years old. Wisconsin authorities describe her as having blonde hair and green eyes, approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing approximately 135 pounds. Other historical sources have reported somewhat different height and weight ranges.
Krista also has several identifying tattoos, including a rose on her lower right leg, a pink breast-cancer ribbon on her left arm, a heart on her left breast and three footprints containing her children’s names on her lower left leg. She may also be identified by her maiden name, Kellerman, or a former married surname, Lorbecki.
Her case is listed under NamUs MP37704 in secondary sources that reference her NamUs record.
Anyone with information that could help authorities locate Krista Sypher’s remains is asked to contact the Plover Police Department at 715-345-5255.
