Detailed Case Breakdown
Melissa June Beson Missing Person Case: What Happened in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin?
Melissa June Beson, a member of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, disappeared in northern Wisconsin on March 17, 2025. What initially appeared to be a case centered on a woman walking near Indian Village Road developed into a much more complicated investigation after police received new information about where Beson went later that day.
More than a year after her disappearance, Beson remained missing, and law enforcement continued searching for answers in 2026.
Melissa Besonβs Disappearance
Melissa Beson was 37 years old when she disappeared from Lac du Flambeau in Vilas County, Wisconsin. She is Native American, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes. She has numerous tattoos, including tattoos on her neck, arms and legs.
Early information released by authorities stated that Beson had been observed on March 17, 2025, walking on Indian Village Road near Wayman Lane toward Highway 47. She was reportedly wearing red sweatpants, a black sleeveless shirt and a gray sweatshirt.
Her concerned family members reported her missing on March 23, six days after she was last seen.
An Extensive Search Begins
The Lac du Flambeau Tribal Police Department launched an extensive investigation with assistance from numerous local, county, state and other agencies.
Search teams conducted ground searches and used aircraft, drones, specially trained search dogs and underwater drones. Investigators also reviewed footage from hundreds of surveillance cameras and interviewed numerous people while following tips concerning Besonβs possible whereabouts.
By April 2025, authorities had searched hundreds of acres around Lac du Flambeau. Reports that Beson might have been seen in the Wausau area were investigated, but police said those reports had not been substantiated at that time.
The search continued expanding. By May 2025, authorities reported that more than 3,400 acres had been searched.
$25,000 Reward Offered for Information
In May 2025, the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians announced a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to Besonβs return and/or the arrest and prosecution of anyone involved in her disappearance.
The reward did not mean investigators had determined that a crime occurred. Authorities continued pursuing information concerning what happened to Beson and where she might be.
New Information Changes the Investigation
A significant development was publicly announced during the summer of 2025.
Investigators learned that Besonβs movements on March 17 apparently continued beyond the location originally described as her last known sighting.
Police said Beson accepted a ride from three local people traveling in a van. The group drove around Lac du Flambeau before stopping near Kiboniki Point Lane and a Kiboniki Lake boat landing. Beson reportedly exited the van and began walking south on County Highway D.
One of the people from the van followed her in an effort to persuade her to return. According to investigators, he then saw a northbound vehicle stop near Beson. Because the man had an outstanding arrest warrant, he reportedly believed the vehicle might be law enforcement and fled into the woods.
He later returned to the van believing Beson had been picked up by police.
Investigators eventually identified the driver who had stopped beside Beson. According to police, that witness said Beson appeared highly agitated and declined an offer for a ride. The witness continued north while Beson continued walking south on County Highway D near the Headflyer Road area.
This information substantially changed the geographical focus of the investigation.
Searches Shift Toward County Highway D
After receiving the new information, investigators concentrated additional searches along County Highway D south of Kiboniki Point Lane.
Police searched areas adjacent to the highway using ground teams, drones and canines. Authorities also said they were investigating the possibility that Beson could have been picked up by an unknown person after the witness drove away.
That remains a possibility under investigation rather than an established account of what happened.
Latest Investigation Information
The case remained active more than a year after Melissa Beson disappeared.
On April 7, 2026, The Lakeland Times reported that Beson remained missing more than a year after she was last seen.
Public reporting shows that the physical search also continued.
On June 3 and June 4, 2026, law enforcement personnel representing several agencies participated in another round of searching for Beson. Reporting on that operation also noted that Wisconsin authorities had previously issued an endangered-person alert concerning Beson through the Wisconsin Crime Alert Network.
As of the latest publicly available information located for this article, Melissa Beson has not been publicly reported as found. Her listing remains active with the Wisconsin Department of Justice Clearinghouse for Missing & Exploited Children & Adults, which lists her as missing since March 17, 2025.
