Peter Dwight Germain was 76 years old when he disappeared from the wilderness west of Trapper Creek in Alaska’s Matanuska-Susitna Borough. He was born July 14, 1943, stood approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighed about 165 pounds. He had brown or graying-brown hair and brown eyes.

The last confirmed communication from Germain came on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. According to the Alaska Department of Public Safety’s missing-person bulletin, Germain sent a text message using his inReach device from his remote property approximately 40 miles west of Trapper Creek.

An inReach device uses satellite communications, allowing messages to be transmitted from remote areas where ordinary cellular service may be unavailable. Germain’s message became the last known contact anyone had with him.

A Search of the Remote Property Found No Sign of Germain

After Germain stopped communicating, his remote cabin, other buildings and the surrounding area were checked. Investigators did not locate him. His clothing at the time he disappeared was unknown, and authorities did not know which direction he may have traveled.

The Alaska State Troopers’ original bulletin noted one possible explanation for why Germain had left his property: he may have gone to cut wood somewhere nearby. That was presented as a possibility rather than a confirmed account of his movements.

The case was reported to the Alaska State Troopers under incident number AK20016949, with public case data listing March 9, 2020, as the agency report date. The Department of Public Safety issued its missing-person bulletin on March 12, 2020.

Germain’s Snowmachine and Personal Belongings Were Found

A significant development came approximately three months after the disappearance.
