Ronald Johnson Disappears During a Planned Trip Across North Dakota

Ronald Lee Johnson lived in Riverdale, North Dakota, and was preparing for a trip that would eventually take him south to California for the winter. Before leaving North Dakota, he planned to visit family members and attend a medical appointment.

Johnson was supposed to visit his son in Jamestown on October 15, 2011. He never arrived. He was then expected to see his sister in Valley City on October 16 and attend a stress test at the VA Hospital in Fargo on October 17. He missed those plans as well.

The mystery deepened when investigators learned Johnson had apparently gone in the opposite direction.

Surveillance Footage Places Ronald Johnson at 4 Bears Casino

Banking information led investigators to 4 Bears Casino and Lodge in New Town. Surveillance footage subsequently confirmed that Johnson himself had been at the casino during the early morning hours of October 16.

According to reports, casino security cameras captured Johnson leaving in his distinctive gold Cadillac. A later account reported that he signaled a right turn onto Highway 23 in the direction of New Town. This became the last publicly documented sighting of Johnson.

Neither Johnson nor the Cadillac has been reliably seen since.

What Investigators Found at Ronald Johnson’s Home

When Johnson’s son checked his father’s home in Riverdale, the scene reportedly suggested Johnson had not finished preparing for his planned winter trip.

Groceries had been left out, the refrigerator was stocked and a suitcase was only partially packed. Johnson’s medication and checkbook were also left behind. His Cadillac, however, was gone.

Those circumstances raised concern because Johnson had significant medical needs. He was diabetic, had previously undergone double-bypass heart surgery and required medication. Family members also said it was unlike him to miss medical appointments or disappear without telling anyone.

Searchers Look for Johnson and His Gold Cadillac

The McLean County Sheriff’s Department led the investigation, with assistance from the North Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol and others.

Civil Air Patrol aircraft searched areas around Riverdale as well as Johnson’s preferred routes through the region. Searchers also attempted to use cellphone information to narrow down his possible location. Although his cellphone generated limited information, investigators were unable to pinpoint a location from it.

Johnson’s daughters personally traveled routes their father may have driven, looking for his Cadillac or any indication that it had left the roadway.

As investigators learned more about Johnson’s stop in New Town, the search area expanded. Deputies searched portions of McLean and Ward counties, while authorities in California were contacted because Johnson had intended to spend the winter near Needles.

By early November 2011, the intensive Civil Air Patrol operation had been scaled back because no evidence had been discovered that identified another area requiring an aerial, ground or water search.

The investigation nevertheless continued. A December 2011 report said investigators were still following leads and conducting drives through areas where Johnson or his vehicle might be found.

The Missing Cadillac Remains a Major Clue

Johnson’s vehicle is one of the most identifiable elements of the case.

He was driving a gold, four-door 1982 Cadillac Fleetwood bearing North Dakota license plate HZZ466. Investigators specifically emphasized the car because its age, size and appearance made it relatively distinctive.

The fact that both Johnson and the Cadillac disappeared has continued to attract attention from people following the case.

No publicly confirmed discovery of the vehicle has been announced.
