Detailed Case Breakdown
Nahida Ahmed Khatib: The Unsolved 1976 Wauwatosa, Wisconsin Disappearance
Nearly five decades after 30-year-old Nahida Ahmed Khatib vanished from her Wauwatosa, Wisconsin home, her disappearance remains unresolved. What investigators encountered inside the house on October 1, 1976 — an unattended two-year-old child, food being prepared, a partially consumed cup of coffee, and Nahida’s personal belongings left behind — has long suggested that whatever caused her to leave happened suddenly and unexpectedly.
Nahida Khatib Disappears From Her Wauwatosa Home
Nahida Ahmed Khatib was last seen on October 1, 1976, at her home in the 4000 block of North Menomonee River Parkway in Wauwatosa, a Milwaukee County suburb. She was 30 years old and was babysitting her two-year-old niece that day.
When Nahida could not be located, the circumstances inside the residence raised immediate concerns. Her young niece had been left unattended in a playpen. Frozen meat was thawing in the kitchen, additional food was on the stove, and a half-empty cup of coffee remained behind. Nahida’s purse, keys, clothing and shoes were also reportedly still at the residence.
The clothing she apparently had on — or the only clothing items missing from the home — consisted of a green robe and fuzzy or fur slippers. There was no indication that she had packed for a trip or prepared to leave for an extended period. Authorities have not accepted the theory that she simply abandoned her life and family.
A Divorce and Reports That Nahida Feared Her Husband
At the time she disappeared, Nahida and her husband, Fahmi “Sam” Khatib, were going through a contentious divorce. Nahida was born in Palestine and raised in Lebanon before moving to the United States after marrying Fahmi in 1962. She had lived in the Wauwatosa area for approximately a decade.
According to published case summaries, Nahida had reportedly told neighbors that she was afraid of Fahmi and that he wanted to kill her. Investigators also learned that a suspicious vehicle had reportedly been seen in Nahida’s driveway on the day she disappeared and was later linked to one of Fahmi’s relatives. Nahida’s sister said Nahida would not have opened the door to someone she did not know.
Fahmi became the principal focus of investigators. Published case summaries identify him as the prime and only suspect, although he was never charged with causing Nahida’s disappearance. He died in 2001.
The couple’s divorce was finalized in December 1977, approximately fourteen months after Nahida disappeared. Fahmi subsequently raised their son and reportedly told him that his mother had abandoned him. Authorities, however, did not believe that Nahida voluntarily left her child and previous life behind.
The Search for Nahida and Her Legal Death
Nahida remained missing as the years passed. Historical newspaper records cited by later researchers show that authorities were still conducting searches connected with the case in 1984. Newspaper coverage from February 1984 included reports titled “Body not found, search called off” and “Wauwatosa will pay for search for body.”
Later that year, after Nahida had been missing for eight years, a Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge declared her legally dead. A legal declaration of death did not resolve what happened to her, and no remains were identified as Nahida’s.
A Human Skull Raises Hope for an Answer
A potential breakthrough came more than three decades after Nahida disappeared.
On April 5, 2008, a fisherman discovered part of a human skull along the Menomonee River in Milwaukee. The location attracted investigators’ attention because the river ran near Nahida’s former home. Initial examination indicated that the remains were those of a woman in her thirties and were at least approximately two decades old, characteristics that made Nahida a possible match.
Wauwatosa Detective Lisa Hudson pursued DNA testing, and the skull was analyzed at the University of North Texas Health Science Center for Human Identification. Nahida’s family provided comparative DNA.
The hoped-for identification did not come. In January 2009, Wauwatosa police announced that DNA testing excluded Nahida Khatib as the woman whose skull had been recovered from the river. The result eliminated one possible answer but left Nahida’s disappearance unresolved.
The Investigation Today
As of September 2026, Nahida’s disappearance remains publicly listed by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Clearinghouse for Missing & Exploited Children & Adults. The state lists her as a missing adult from Wauwatosa and continues to direct anyone with information to the Wauwatosa Police Department. The current state listing gives her age as 80 and records her disappearance date as October 1, 1976.
Her NamUs number is MP19782. A Wisconsin Department of Justice missing-person poster also identifies the case as NamUs MP19782, and contemporary NamUs-derived listings continue to carry that number.
There has been some more recent administrative activity surrounding her case information. The Doe Network recorded that information in Nahida Ahmed Khatib’s case was updated on March 10, 2023. An earlier Doe Network update also indicated that DNA was available in her case. These database updates should not be confused with the announcement of a new suspect, search, arrest, or forensic breakthrough.
A review of currently available public sources through September 2026 did not locate a later publicly announced law-enforcement breakthrough after the exclusion of the Menomonee River skull. There is no publicly reported arrest or recovery of Nahida’s remains. Fahmi Khatib, whom published case summaries describe as investigators’ principal suspect, died in 2001 and was never charged in connection with her disappearance.
Nahida’s case therefore remains an enduring Wisconsin missing-person mystery: a woman apparently interrupted during an ordinary morning at home, leaving a child, coffee, food and virtually all of her belongings behind.
