The Disappearance of Tammy Lee Jovaag
Tammy Jovaag was 55 years old when she disappeared from Holcombe, a community in Chippewa County in northwestern Wisconsin, on Tuesday, June 30, 2015.
Wisconsin’s official missing-person information lists Jovaag’s residence as her last known location. Other case sources provide additional details about her movements that day.
Jovaag reportedly did not have a vehicle and commonly traveled on foot. Surveillance footage from a gas station near her residence reportedly showed her walking away from the station in the direction of home. A neighbor subsequently reported seeing her near the end of her driveway.
That sighting became one of the last known observations of Jovaag before she vanished.
She has not been seen or heard from since.
What Tammy Jovaag Was Wearing
According to available case information, Jovaag was reportedly wearing a light-colored zip-up sweatshirt or jacket, a dark-colored shirt, light blue jeans, and hiking or work-style boots when she disappeared.
She is described as a white woman with blonde hair and blue eyes, approximately 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing about 120 pounds. One reported distinguishing characteristic is a scar shaped like a backward “L” on her forehead. Her ears are also pierced.
Medical Concerns Made Her Disappearance Urgent
Jovaag was an insulin-dependent diabetic, and authorities reported that she did not have her medication with her.
Published case information has also reported that she was experiencing depression and drinking heavily around the time she disappeared.
These circumstances increased concerns for her welfare after she failed to return or make contact.
Search Efforts in 2015
Authorities launched an extensive search after Jovaag disappeared.
Contemporary reporting preserved in missing-person discussions indicates that deputies used cadaver dogs while searching areas near Highway 27 and the Chippewa-Rusk county line. Despite the search effort, investigators did not find Jovaag or evidence establishing what happened to her.
The case remained unresolved for years.
Some published case summaries have stated that authorities did not believe Jovaag was still alive and that foul play was not suspected. Those statements reflect information published about the investigation at the time and should not be interpreted as establishing what ultimately happened to her.
No publicly confirmed explanation for Jovaag’s disappearance has been established.
Tammy Jovaag’s Case Remained Active
Jovaag continued to appear in Wisconsin’s missing-person records in the years following her disappearance.
Her case is registered with the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System under NamUs MP29391.
The Wisconsin Clearinghouse for Missing & Exploited Children & Adults also continues to maintain a missing-person listing for Jovaag. The state’s current missing-person directory continues to identify her as missing from Chippewa County.
Her case was also added to The Doe Network, where it was assigned case number 5049DFWI.
Major Development in January 2026
More than ten years after Jovaag disappeared, investigators acted on new information connected to her case.
According to a January 13, 2026, press release from Rusk County Sheriff Phil Grassmann, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office had recently received information related to Jovaag’s disappearance.
That information led authorities to Willard Township in neighboring Rusk County.
On January 13, 2026, law enforcement executed a search warrant there as part of the investigation into Jovaag’s disappearance.
The operation involved numerous agencies and organizations, including the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Rusk County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Department of Justice, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin K9 SOS Search and Rescue, Chippewa County Highway Department, and Rusk County Highway Department.
What Investigators Found During the 2026 Search
Authorities reported that the Willard Township search did not locate human remains or other evidence.
Investigators did not publicly disclose the precise nature of the information that prompted the search warrant, who supplied that information, or why the particular location in Willard Township became significant.
The absence of evidence during that search did not close the investigation.
Authorities specifically described Jovaag’s case as ongoing and said the Chippewa and Rusk County sheriff’s offices remained committed to working together to bring her home.
As of the latest publicly located information, Jovaag remains missing.
What Happened to Tammy Jovaag?
The known sequence of events leaves several unanswered questions.
Jovaag was reportedly captured on surveillance footage walking toward home. A neighbor reportedly saw her near her driveway afterward. Then, sometime after those observations, she disappeared without a confirmed trace.
Despite extensive searching in 2015 and renewed investigative activity more than a decade later, authorities have not publicly established where she went or what happened after the final reported sighting.
The January 2026 search is particularly important because it demonstrates that investigators were still pursuing new information more than ten years after Jovaag vanished.
However, authorities have not publicly identified a suspect, announced an arrest, or confirmed that Jovaag was the victim of a homicide.
Her case therefore remains an unresolved missing-person investigation.
Authorities Continue to Seek Information
Anyone with information concerning Tammy Jovaag’s disappearance is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
Following the January 2026 search, authorities directed people with information to Chippewa County Crime Stoppers at 715-944-3949 or the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 715-726-7701.
Wisconsin’s official missing-person listing also provides 715-726-7715 for the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office and 1-800-843-4673 (1-800-THE-HOPE) for missing-person tips.
Even information that may have seemed insignificant in 2015 could potentially assist investigators when compared with evidence and information developed during the years since Jovaag disappeared.
