In August 1985, David was traveling east with his mother and sister as the family relocated from California to Massachusetts. His mother and sister traveled in a moving truck while David rode a burgundy or maroon 1978 Yamaha Model 1100 motorcycle bearing California license plate 8N3477. The motorcycle had saddlebags and a luggage rack.

Because David was traveling separately, the family developed a system of stopping approximately every 30 miles to reconnect. When they reached Evanston, Wyoming, David’s mother and sister wanted to stop. David decided to continue east, intending to meet them farther along the route. They never saw him again.

Some older accounts contain conflicting details about the direction of the family’s move and even identify Evanston as being in Illinois. David’s sister later publicly clarified that the family was moving from California to Massachusetts and that the stop occurred in Evanston, Wyoming.

The Bingo Truck Stop and David’s Final Known Contact

On August 5, David telephoned his aunt after experiencing mechanical trouble with his motorcycle. He said he had pushed the motorcycle to the Bingo Truck Stop in the Fort Bridger area, where another motorcyclist helped repair it.

The unidentified man has remained an important part of the mystery. Published accounts often describe David as saying the motorcyclist was “rough-looking” and that he initially felt afraid of him. David’s sister later clarified that although David was initially uneasy, after the man repaired the motorcycle David apparently thought the stranger was okay. Approximately nine days after David disappeared, campers discovered his motorcycle in an isolated area off South Baxter Road near the Sweetwater County Airport outside Rock Springs, Wyoming. The location was roughly 60 miles east of the Fort Bridger area.

The motorcycle presented investigators with an unusual scene. Its keys were reportedly still with the bike, it contained approximately half a tank of gasoline, and it was capable of running. David, however, was nowhere to be found. Searches of the surrounding area failed to locate him.

Latest Publicly Available Investigation Information

David remains listed as missing. A Wyoming missing-person listing updated in 2025 continued to identify him as missing from Fort Bridger on August 5, 1985, and contemporary missing-person resources continue to carry his case.

One development that attracted attention occurred on November 11, 2023, when a hunter discovered a human skull in the Red Desert near Wamsutter in Sweetwater County. Because several people have disappeared in the region over the decades, David was among the missing people publicly discussed as a possible identity shortly after the discovery.

Subsequent forensic analysis described the unidentified person as a male estimated to have been 25 to 35 years old.
